Luc 15, 1-32

The lost Sheep

They were coming near him
all the tax collectors
and the sinners to listen to him.

And they were grumbling in a loud voice,
the Pharisees and the scribes, saying:
“This man welcomes sinners
and eats with them.”

And he told them
this parable, saying:
“Which one of you,
having hundred sheep
and having lost one of them,
does not leave the ninety-nine
in the wilderness and go
ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπολωλὸς ἕως εὕρῃ αὐτό;
after the one that is lost until he finds it?

And when he has found it
he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
And when he has come to the home
he calls together the friends and the neighbors,
saying to them: ‘Rejoice with me,
for I have found the sheep of mine that was lost.’

I tell you that so there will be joy in the heaven
over one sinner who repents
(more) than over ninety-nine righteous persons
who have no need for repentance.

The lost Coin

Or what woman having ten silver coins,
if she has lost one silver coin,
does not light a lamp
and sweep clean the house,
καὶ ζητεῖ ἐπιμελῶς ἕως οὗ εὕρῃ;
and search carefully until she finds (it)?

And when she has found (it),
she calls her friends
and neighbors, saying:
‘Rejoice with me,
for I have found the coin
that I had lost.’
Just so, I tell you,
there will be joy
in the presence of the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.”

The lost Son

And he said: “A man had two sons.
And the younger of them said to his father:
‘Father, give me
the part that belongs to me of the property!’
And he divided between them the property.

And after not many days,
having gathered all, the younger son
traveled away from home to a far country,

and there he wasted his property,
living lawless.

When he had spent everything,
there originated a severe famine
everywhere in that land,
and he himself began to be in need.

And after having went out
he attached himself to one of the citizens
of that land,
and he sent him to his fields
to look after pigs.

And he did long to be fed
with the peelings that the pigs ate;
and nobody gave him

And having come to himself he said:
‘How many day labourers of my father
abound in bread,
but here of hunger I am dying!
Having got up I will go to my father,
and I will say to him:
“Father, I have sinned against the heaven
and before you;
I am no longer worthy
to be called your son;
treat me like one of your day labourers.”
And having got up he went to his father.

And while he was still far off,
he saw him, his father,
and he got compassion;
and having run (to him)
he threw his arms round his neck
and kissed him.

And the son said to him:
“Father, I have sinned against the heaven
and before you;
I am no longer worthy
to be called your son.”

But the father said to his slaves,
“Quickly, bring out a robe, the best one,
and put it on him,
and put a ring on his hand,
and sandals on his feet.
And bring the calf, the fatted one,
sacrifice (it),
and let us, having eaten, celebrate,
for this son of mine was dead
and is alive again, he was lost
and is found!”
And they began to celebrate.

And his elder son was in the field;
and when he, coming, approached the house,
he heard music and dancing,
and having called to him one of the slaves
he asked what that was.
And he said to him:
“Your brother has come,
and your father has sacrificed
the calf, the fatted one,
because, being healthy, he has got him back.”

He became angry and did not wish to go in.
And his father, having come out,
invited him.

But he, answering, said to his father,
“See, so many years I serve you,
and never I have violated your command;
and to me you have never given a young goat
so that with my friends I might celebrate.
But when this son of yours,
he who has devoured your property
with prostitutes, came back,
you offered for him the fatted calf!’

And he said to him:
“Child, always you are with me,
and all that is mine is yours.
To celebrate and to rejoice was necessary,
because this brother of yours
was dead and has come to life,
and he was lost and has been found.”
