he and all that (was) of him,
came to Beër-sheba,

And the god spoke to Israel

“Jacob, Jacob!”
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Τί ἐστιν;
And he said: “What’s on?”
And he said, “I am the god of your fathers,
do not be afraid to go down to Egypt;
for I shall make of you a great nation there,
and I myself shall go down
with you to Egypt,
and I shall lead you up at the end,
and Joseph will lay the hands

Ἕως πότε σὺ πενθεῖς ἐπὶ Σαουλ, “Until when you mourn for Saul?
And I have rejected him
(wishing that)
μὴ βασιλεύειν ἐπὶ Ισραηλ;
he not remains king of Israel;
fill your flask with olive oil;
come, I will send you to Jesse,
till Bethlehem,

for I have seen among his sons (somebody)
to be king for me.”

And Samuel said:
Πῶς πορευθῶ;
“How can I do that?
And Saul will hear it,
And he will kill me.”

And the lord said:
“Take a calf of cattle in your hand
and you will say:
“To make a sacrifice for the lord I have come.”

And you will invite Jesse to the sacrifice,

““Don’t judge by his appearance
nor by the state of his height,
for I have rejected him;
for not the way the man sees
sees the lord.
For the man judges by outward appearance,

“Send for him and let him come,
For we will not sit down to eat
until he arrives.”

and let he come down to me!

And if he can fight against me
and if he kills me,
then we will be for you slaves,
but if I am strong enough and kill him,
you will be for us slaves
and you will serve us.

on this day.

like one of them. Will I not go
and beat him
καὶ ἀφελῶ σήμερον ὄνειδος ἐξ Ισραηλ;
and take away now the blame from Israël?
For the reason that this pagan figure
ὃς ὠνείδισεν παράταξιν θεοῦ ζῶντος;

and my lord Joab
and the servants of my lord
throw up (a wall) in the open field;
and shall I go into my house
to eat and drink
καὶ κοιμηθῆναι μετὰ τῆς γυναικός μου;
and sleep with my wife?
πῶς;
how (can I do so)?
(…)

And David said to Urias,
Remain here also to-day,

Lead Urias
in front of the fight’s severe (part),
and retreat from behind him,
and he shall he be wounded and be killed.

And it happened while Joab was watching

and fought with Joab;
and some of the people fell
of the servants of David

And Joab sent (a messenger),
and reported to David
all the events of the war,
and he commanded the messenger, saying

When you have finished
all the stories of the war
to report to the king,
then it shall happen if arises the anger of the king
and he shall say to you:

“Τί ὅτι ἠγγίσατε πρὸς τὴν πόλιν πολεμῆσαι;
Why did you go to the town to fight?
οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι τοξεύσουσιν ἀπάνωθεν τοῦ τείχους;
Did you not know that they would shoot from off the wall?

21 τίς ἐπάταξεν τὸν Αβιμελεχ υἱὸν Ιεροβααλ;
Who did kill Abimelech, a son of Jerobaal?
Did not a woman cast upon him
a fragment of a millstone from above the wall,
and was he killed in Thamasi?
να τί προσηγάγετε πρὸς τὸ τεῖχος;
Why did you approach to the wall?”

And you shall say: Also Urias
your servant the Chettite was killed.

And the messenger of Joab went
to the king to Jerusalem,
and he came and reported to David all
that Joab told him,
all the affairs of the war.

And David was very angry at Joab,
and said to the messenger,
Ἵνα τί προσηγάγετε πρὸς τὴν πόλιν τοῦ πολεμῆσαι;
“Why did you approach to the town to fight?
οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι πληγήσεσθε ἀπὸ τοῦ τείχους;
Did you not know that you would be wounded from the wall?

τίς ἐπάταξεν τὸν Αβιμελεχ υἱὸν Ιεροβααλ;
Who killed Abimelech, a son of Jerobaal?
Did not a woman cast upon him ,
a piece of millstone from the wall,
καὶ ἀπέθανεν ἐν Θαμασι;
and was he killed in Thamasi?
ἵνα τί προσηγάγετε πρὸς τὸ τεῖχος;
Why did you approach to the wall?”

And the messenger said to David:
“They prevailed against us, the men,
and they came out against us into the field,
and we came upon them
even to the doors of the gate.

And the archers shot
at your servants from off the wall,
and there were killed (some) of the king’s servants,
also your servant Urias the Chettite was killed.”

And David said to the messenger:
“This shall you say to Joab.
Let not be grievous in your eyes this matter,
for sometimes one way and at another time another way
the sword devours;
strengthen your fight against the town,
and destroy it, and strengthen it (the fight).”

And the wife of Urias heard
that Urias was killed, her husband ,
and she mourned for her husband.

And (the time of) the sorrow expired,
and David sent (for her)
and took her into his house,
and she became for him a wife,
and bore him a son.

And evil was the thing
which David did, in the eyes of the Lord.

DAVID AND NATHAN

2 Samuel 12

And the Lord sent Nathan
the prophet to David;
and he went to him, and said to him,
There were two men in one town,
one rich and one poor.
And the rich (man) had sheep
and cattle, very many,

And the poor (man had) nothing else but
one little lamb,
which he had purchased, and he preserved
and reared her;
and it grew up with himself
and with his children in common;

of his bread it ate
and out of his cup it drank ,
and in his bosom it slept,
and it was for him like a daughter

And a traveller came to the rich man,
and he spared to take of his sheep
and of his cattle, to dress
for the travelling guest who came to him;
and he took the lamb of the poor man,
and cooked it for the man
who came to him.

And David was greatly moved with anger
against the man, and David said to Nathan:

As the Lord lives, a son of death the man (shall be)
who did this,
and the lamb he shall restore seven-fold,
because he did that thing.
and because he did not spare (the lamb).

And Nathan said to David:
You are the man who has done this;
this says the Lord God of Israel:

I am (who) anointed you to king over Israel,
and I am (who) rescued you out the hand of Saul;
and I gave you the house of your lord,
and the wives of your lord
into your bosom,
and I gave you the house of Israel and Juda;
and if that is little,
I shall give you yet more.

Why did you disobey the word of the Lord,
τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ;
to do what is evil in his eyes?
You let kill Urias the Chettite with a sword,
and you did take his wife to be your wife,
and you have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon

Now therefore the sword shall not depart
from your house for ever,
because you have disobeyed me,
and you did take the wife of Urias the Chettite
to be your wife.

This says the Lord,
‘Behold, I will raise up against you
evil out of your house,
and I will take your wives
before your eyes,
and I will give them to your neighbour,
and he shall lie with your wives
in the sight of this sun.

12 ὅτι σὺ ἐποίησας κρυβῇ, For you did it secretly,
and I will do this thing
in the sight of all Israel,
and before this sun.

And David said to Nathan:
I have sinned against the Lord.
And Nathan said to David:
And the Lord has put away your sin;
you shall not die.

But because you have given great occasion of provocation
to the enemies of the Lord by this thing,
your son that is born to you
shall die a sure death.
And Nathan departed
to his house.

1 Kings 3

SOLOMON JUDGES A DIFFICULT CASE

Then appeared two prostitutes to the king
and stood before him.
And one wife said:
“Pardon me, my lord.
Me and this woman live in one house,
and we bore (a baby) in the house.

And it happened on the third day
after my child was born,
that this woman also bore (a baby).
And there is no one with us
and we alone
(nobody) except both of us in the house.

And the little son of that woman died
in the night, because she laid on him.

And she arose at midnight
and took my little son from beside me,
and laid him at her bosom,
and her dead little son
she laid at my bosom.

And I rose in the morning
to nurse my little son,
and he was dead.
and behold, I looked at him closely in the morning
and behold, he was not my little son which I had borne.”

And the other woman said:
‘No, but my little son (is) the living,
but your little son (is) the dead (one).
And they argued before the king.

And the king said to them:
‘You say: This little son of mine (is) the living (one)
and the little son of her (is) the dead (one)’.
and you say
‘No, but my little son (is) the living,
and your little son (is) the dead (one).’

And the king said:
Bring me a sword.
And they brought the sword
to the king.

And the king said:
“Cut the suckling, living little boy
in two, and give the half of him to her
and the half of him to her!”

And the woman answered,
of whom was the living little son,
and said to the king,
because this mother was in confusion
about her little son, καὶ εἶπεν Ἐν ἐμοί, κύριε,
and she said: ‘Pardon me, lord!
Give her the little boy
and don’t kill him to death!’

And she (the other woman) said:
‘Neither of mine nor of her he must be; divide him!’

And the king answered and said,
‘Give the little boy to (her) who has spoken (firstly).
Give him to her
and do not kill him to death.
She is his mother!’

And all Israel heard
this judgment, which decided the king,
and they were in awe of the king,
for they saw that the insight of God (was) in him
for rendering justice.
