Joseph’s Brothers return to Egypt with Benjamin. · 3771 dagen geleden by Ad van den Ende

Genesis 43

And the hunger strengthened in the land.
And it happened
when they had finished
to eat the grain
that they had brought from Egypt,
and their father said to them:
“After having set off
buy us a little food.”
Judas spoke to him, saying:
“He solemnly assured us,
the man, saying:
‘You shall not see my face
if not your brother,
the younger one, is with you.’
So, if you send
our brother with us,
we will go down
and we will buy you food;
but if you do not send
our brother with us
we will not go down,
for the man spoke to us, saying:
‘You shall not see my face
if not your brother,
the younger one, is with you.”

Israel said:
“Why did you treat me badly
telling the man
εἰ ἔστιν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός;
that there is for you a brother?”

They said:
“Asking the man made inquiries about us
and about our family, saying:
Εἰ ἔτι ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ζῇ;
‘Is your father still alive?
εἰ ἔστιν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός;
Do you have a brother?’
And we told him
in relation to this question.
Could we know that he would say to us:
‘Ἀγάγετε τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν;
‘‘Bring your brother down’?”

And Judah said
to Israel, his father:
“Send the boy with me,
and after standing up we will go,
so that we live and not die,
and we and you and our family.
I myself am surety for him
out of my hand claim him,
if I will not bring him back to you
and will set him before you,
I will be guilty for you
all the days (of my life).
For if we had not delayed,
we would allready have returned twice.”

And Israel said to them, their father:
“If it is so, do this:
take out of the fruits of the land
in your bags,
and carry down for the man gifts
of balm and of honey,
incense and resin
and pistachio nuts and almonds.

And take double the money
in your hands;
the money that was returned
in your sacks,.
you have to carry it back with you;
perhaps it is an mistake.
And take your brother,
and having got on your feet
you must go down to the man.
May my god give you
mercy facing the man,
and that he may send back
your brother, the one, and Benjamin.

ἐγὼ μὲν γάρ,
For really, I,
such as I am made childless,
I am made childless.”

And the men, after taking that presents,
took also double the money
in their hands and Benjamin,
and having got on their feet
they went down to Egypt
and placed themself facing Joseph.

And Joseph saw them,
and Benjamin his brother
from the same mother,
and said to the man at the head of his house:
“Bring the men
into the house,
and slaughter sacrificial animals
and make them ready
for together with me the men will eat
loafs of bread at noon.”
The man did
as Joseph had said,
and brought the men
to the house of Joseph.

And the men, seeing
that they were brought to the house of Joseph,
said, “Because of the money, replaced
in our sacks the first time
we are brought in
to bring false charges against us,
and fall upon us
to seize us as slaves
and (to seize) our donkeys.”

And having gone to the man,
the (head) of the house of Joseph,
they spoke with him in the gatehouse of the house,
saying: “We ask you, lord,
we came down the first time
to buy food;
and it happened
when we came to (the lodging place)
to make halt,
and we opened our sacks,
and this money of each one
(was) in his sack;
our money
in full weight
we have brought back now
in our hands;
and other money
we have brought with us
to buy food.
We do not know who has put
the money in our sacks.”

He said to them:
“May god have mercy on you!
Do not be afraid;
your god and the god of your fathers
has given you treasures
in your sacks,
and your money
I have received (as being ) of good repute.”
And he brought Simeon out to them.
And he brought water
to wash their feet,
and gave fodder for their donkeys
And they prepared the gifts
for Joseph’s coming at noon,
for they had heard that he would dine there.

And Joseph came home,
and they brought him the gifts
that they had in their hands
to the house ,
and bowed before him
with their faces to the ground.

He asked them:
“How do you do?” and said to them:
“Is your father healthy, the older man
ὃν εἴπατε; ἔτι ζῇ;
of whom you spoke; is he still alive?”
And they said: “He is healthy,
your servant, our father, is still alive.”
And he said: “(He may be ) blessed,
that man, by god!”
And after leaning down they kneeled for him.
And looking up with is eyes
Joseph saw Benjamin,
his brother from the same mother,
and said, “(Is) this your brother,
the younger one, of whom you said
πρός με ἀγαγεῖν;
to bring him to me?
And he said:
“God may have pity on you, my son!’
Joseph became confused,
for his hart was touched
by his broter,
andhe did long to weep,
and after going into the interior room
he wept there.

And having washed his face
and having come out
he controlled himself
and said: “Serve bread.”

And they served him alone, ,
and them apart,
and the Egyptians
who ate with him
apart,
for the Egyptians could not eat together
with the Hebrews bread,
for (that) is a horror to the Egyptians.

And they took a seat opposite him,
the firstborn according to his older age
and the younger one according to his youth,
and the men looked in amazement,
everyone to his brother.

They took portions
from him to them;
enlarged was the portion of Benjamin
in comparision with the portions of them all
five times as much as those of them.
And they drank and were drunk with him.
