Joseph’s brothers return to Canaan. · 3773 dagen geleden by Ad van den Ende

Genesis 42, 25 – 38

Joseph then gave orders
to fill their bags with grain,
and to give back the money of every man
in his sack,
and to give them
provisions for the journey.
And it happened for them so.

And having loaded the grain
on their donkeys,
they departed from there.

When one (of them) had opened his sack
to give fodder to his donkeys
(at the lodging place) where they made halt ,
he saw the roll of his money,
and (it) was at the top
of the opening of the sack;

and he said to his brothers:
“To me is given back the money,
and see, it (is)in my sack!”
And they lost their heart,
and turned trembling
to one another, saying:
Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς ἡμῖν;
“What (is) this that God has done to us?”

And they came to Jacob
their father
in the land of Canaan,
and they told him,
all that had happened to them, saying:
“He has spoken, the man, the lord of the land,
harsh things to us,
and did put us in jail
as if (we were) spying on the land.
And we said to him, ‘We are peaceful men,.
we are not spies!
We are twelve brothers,
sons of our father;
the one is no more,

and the younger one (is) with our father
now in the land of Canaan.
And he said to us, the man,
the lord of the land:
“By this I shall know
that you are peaceful men:
leave one brother here with me
and the purchase of the distribution of grain
of your house taking along you have to go.
And bring to me
your brother, the younger one,
and I shall know that you are not spies
but that you are peacful men,
and your brother I shall give back to you,
and do business in the land.”

And it happened,
when they were emptying their sacks,
and there was of everyone
the bundle of the money.
in the sack of them,

and they saw the bundles of the money of them,
they and their father,
and they were afraid.

And their father Jacob said to them:
“You have made me childless;
Joseph is no more,
Simeon is no more,
and you shall take Benjamin.
To me has happened all this!”

And Reuben spoke to his father, saying:
“Kill my two sons
if I do not bring him back to you!
Give him in my hand,
and I will bring him back to you.”

But he said:
“My son shall not go down with you,
for his brother has died,
and he alone is left.
And it will happen that he falls ill
on the journey that you will make,
and you will bring down my old age
with sorrow to Hades”.
