Joseph sold as a slave · 3798 dagen geleden by Ad van den Ende

Genesis 37

Jacob lived in the land
where had lived his father, in the land of Canaan.

This is the history of Jacob.
Joseph was seventeen years old;
he took care of the sheep with his brothers,
being young, with the sons of Bilhah,
and with the sons of Zilpah,
the wives of his father.
Joseph brought bad reports (about his brothers)
to Israël, their father.

Jacob loved oseph
more than all his (other) sons
because he was a son of his old age.
He made for him a decorated robe.

When his brothers zagen
dat hun vader van hem hield,
meer dan al zijn (andere) zoons,
haatten zij hem
and they could not say to him
something peaceable.

Once, when Joseph had dreamed,
he told this dream to his brothers.
And he said them:
Listen to this dream, οὗ ἐνυπνιάσθην·
which I have dreamed.
I thought we were tying up sheaves
out in the field,
and my sheaf got up and stood up straight,
your sheaves formed a circle
and bowed down to my sheaf.

His brothers asked him:
“Do you think that as a king you will rule over us us,
ἢ κυριεύων κυριεύσεις ἡμῶν;
or as a lord will dominate us?”
And even more they did hate him,
because of his dreams
and because of his words (about them).

Then he saw another dream.
And he told it to his father
and to his brothers.
And he said:”Listen, I dreamed an other dream,
as if the sun and the moon
and eleven stars bowed down to me.”

And his father scolded him,
and he said him:
“What is this dream
ὃ ἐνυπνιάσθης;
that you dreamd?
Do you think we are going to come,
I and your mother and your brothers
προσκυνῆσαί σοι ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν;
to bow down in front of you?”

They were jealous of him, his brothers.
But his father kept thinking about what had been said.

They had gone, his brothers,
to take care of the sheep of their father to Sichem.
And Israel said to Joseph:
Οὐχ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου ποιμαίνουσιν ἐν Συχεμ;
“Do not your brothers graze in Sichem?
Come, let me send you tot them.”
He answered him: “See, here I am.”
Israël said to him:
“When you have gone, see if they are healthy,
your brothers and the sheep,
and you have to tell me.”
And he sent him off from the valley of Hebron,
and he came in Sichem.

And him found a man,
while he was roaming around in the field.
The man asked him, saying:
Τί ζητεῖς;
“What do you look for?”

He replied “I am looking for my brothers.
Tell me where they graze.”
The man said him:
“They have left from here.
For I heared them saying:
Let us go to Dothan.”
And Joseph went behind
his brothers,
and he found them in Dothan.

They saw him a long way off
before that he approached them
and they drew up bad plans to kill him.

Everyone said to his brother:
“See, that dreamer is coming.
Now then come on, let us kill him
and let us throw him in one of the wells,
and let us say that a bad wild animal did eat him;.
and we will see what will come of his dreams!”

When Ruben had heard this
he tried to save him out of their hands.
And he said: “Let us not beat him to death.”
Ruben said to them:
“Do not shed blood!
Throw him in that well
there in the desert.
Do not lay violent hands on him.”
So that he would save him out of their hands,
and would give him back to his father.

It happened, when Joseph had come
to his brothers,
they took Joseph off his robe,
the colourful (robe) round him.

and when they had taken him
they threw him in the well;
the well was empty, it had no water.

They sat down to eat bread;
and regaining sight with their eyes they looked around,
and see, travelling Ishmaelites came out of Gilead,
and their camels were loaded with perfumeries
and sweet-smelling resin and oil of myrrh.
They travelled to bring this to Egypt.

Judas said to his brothers:
“Which use there is if we kill our brother
καὶ κρύψωμεν τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ;
and hide his blood?
Come on, let us sell him to these Ishmaelites;
our hands must not be directed against him,
for he is our brother and our flesh.”
His brothers listened to him.

And they passed, the men,
the Midianites, the merchants,
and they drew Joseph and took him up
out of the well,
And they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites
for twenty gold coins,
and they brought Joseph to Egypt.

And Ruben returned to the well
and did not see Joseph in the well.
and tore his clothes.
And he went back to his brothers.
and said: “The boy is not there!
ἐγὼ δὲ ποῦ πορεύομαι ἔτι;
Where can I go now?”

After they had taken the robe of Joseph
they slaughtered a male little goat
and stained the robe with blood,
and sent the coloured robe
and let bring it to their father,
and said: “We have found that.
Look if it is the robe of your son or not.”

And he looked at it and said:
“The robe of my son is this.
A wild animal dit eat him,
a wild animal has grabbed Joseph.”

Jacob tore his own clothes
and put a sack around his hip
and he mourned his son many days.

And all they gathered, his sons
and his daughters, and they came to comfort him,
and he did not want to be comforted,
saying: “I will go down to my son,
mourning, to (the house of) Hades.”
And his father wept for him.

The Midianites sold Joseph
in Egypt, to Potiphar,
the courtier of the Pharao, the head of the guard.
