The walk to Emmaus · 3996 dagen geleden by Ad van den Ende

And see, two of them, that very day,
were going to a village
being sixty stadiums distant from Jerusalem,
with the name Emmaus.

And they were talking to each other
about all the things that had happened.
And it happened
while they were talking and debating,
Jesus himself, approached
accompanied them,
but their eyes were hindered
from recognizing him.

And he said to them:
“What are these matters
οὓς ἀντιβάλλετε πρὸς ἀλλήλους περιπατοῦντες;
you are discussing with each other, walking along?”
And they stood still, astonished.
And one (of them}, named Cleopas, answering,
said to him:
“{Are} you the only visitor to Jerusalem
and you do not know
{the things} that have happened in her
ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις;
in these days?”

19  καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ποῖα;
And he said to them, “What things?”
And they said to him:
“The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet
powerful deeds and words
before God and all the people.

But how they handed him over,
our chief priests and rulers,
to a condamnation to death,
and crucified him.

But we hoped
that he is the one who would
redeem Israel.
But with that all
it is now the third day
since these things happened.

But also some women of our group
amazed us;
having come, early the morning, to the tomb,
and not having found his body,
they came, saying
also to have seen a vision of angels,
who say he was alive.

And some of those (who were) with us went
ἐπὶ τὸ μνημεῖον, to the tomb,
and found it just
as the women said,
but him they did not see.”

And he said to them:
“O silly people and slow of heart
to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

Did not the Anointed have to suffer these things
καὶ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ;
and enter into his glory?”
And beginning with Moses
and with all the prophets,
he explained to them
that (what was said) in all the scriptures about himself.”

And they approached the village where they were going,
And he pretended to go farther,
and they urged him, saying:
“Stay with us,
because it is against evening
and the day has inclined allready.”
And he went in to stay with them.

And it happened,
when he made lie down with them,
having taken the bread, he blessed
and having broken it gave it to them.
And their eyes were opened
and they recognized him.
and he became invisible for them.

And they said to each other:
“Was not our heart burning {within us}
when he spoke with us on the road,
ὡς διήνοιγεν ἡμῖν τὰς γραφάς;
when he explained to us the scriptures?”

And having got up that very hour
they returned to Jerusalem,

and they found gathered together the eleven
καὶ τοὺς σὺν αὐτοῖς, and those with them,
saying: “The Lord has really risen,
and has appeared to Simon!”
And they narrated that (what had happened) on the road,
and how he became known to them
in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus appears to his disciples

While they were saying these things,
he himself stood among them
and sais to them: “Peace be with you.”
Startled and frightened
they thought to see a ghost.
And he said to them:
“Why are you frightened,
and why do doubts arise
ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμῶν;
in your heart?
See my hands
and my feet that I am myself!
Touch me and see,
because a ghost flesh and bones does not have
like you see I have.”
And saying this
he showed them his hands and his feet.
And while they still did not believe
because of their joy and they were astonished,
εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἔχετέ τι βρώσιμον ἐνθάδε;
he said to them: “Do you have something food here?”
And they gave him
of broiled fish a piece.
and having taken it in front of them he ate.

And he said to them:
“These my words
that I spoke to you still being with you,
that must be fulfilled,
all things written in the law of Moses
and by the prophets and in the psalms about me.”
Then he opened their mind
to understand the scriptures,
and said to them:
“Thus it has been written
that the Christ would suffer
and would rise from the dead on the third day,
and that would be proclaimed in his name
repentance and remission for the forgiveness of sins
to all nations,
beginning from Jerusalem.
You (are) witnesses of these things.
And {look,} I send
the promise of my father to you;
and you, stay in the city
until you have been clothed from on high with power .”

And he led them out
as far as Bethany,
and having lifted up his hands, he blessed them.
And it happened that, while he blessed them,
he departed from them.
And they, worshipping him,
returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and were continually
in the temple praising god.
