The birth of Jesus · Nov 3, 01:23 AM by Ad van den Ende

Lucas 2, 1 – 20

It happened in those days
a decree went out from Emperor Augustus
to register whole the occupied world.
This registration was the first
while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
And all went to be registered,
everyone to his own town.

Joseph also went
out of Galilee from the town of Nazareth
to Judea, to the city of David
which is called Bethlehem,
because he was from the house and family of David,
to be registered with Mary,
with her who was engaged to him,
who was pregnant.

It happened, while they were there,
that were filled the days for her to bear.

And she gave birth to her son,
the firstborn, and wrapped him in bands of cloth
and laid him in a manger,
because there was not for them place in the inn.

And shepherds were in the same region,
staying in the open field and keeping watch by night,
over their flock.
And an angel of the Lord stood before them
and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
and they were afraid with great fear.

And he said to them, the angel:
“Do not be afraid; for see,
I proclaim you great joy
which there will be for all the people,
that is born to you this day a Savior
who is the Anointed, the Lord,
in the city of David,
and this (will be) for you the sign:
you will find a newborn child
wrapped in bands of cloth
and lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the angel
a multitude of a heavenly host
praising God and saying:
“Glory in the highest (heaven) to God,
and on earth peace
among the men of his delight!”

And it happened when they had left them
into the heaven, the angels,
that the shepherds said to one another:
“Let us go therefore to Bethlehem,
and let us see this thing that has taken place,
which the Lord has made known to us.”
And they came, after having hurried,
and found Mary and Joseph,
and the newborn child lying in the manger.

When they saw this, they made known
about this matter
that had been told them
about this child.

And all who heard (it)
were amazed at what had been told
by the shepherds to them.

But Mary treasured all these words
pondering (them) in her heart.

And they returned, the shepherds,
glorifying and praising God
for all they had heard and seen,
as it had been told them.
