Athene visits Telemachus. · Oct 24, 08:42 PM by Ad van den Ende

After speaking this way
to her feet she bound her beautiful sandals,
divine, of gold
which carried her as well over the sea
as over the immense earth
as swiftly as the breath of the wind.

she took her robust spear,
pointed with sharp bronze,
100
heavy, great and strong
with which she destroys the ranks of men,
of heroes, at whom she is angered,
the daughter of a mighty father.

She flew down from the heights of Olympus, swiftly,
and stood in the land Ithaca, at Odysseus´ gate,
at the treshold of the court; in her hand she had a bronze spear,
105
appearing as a visitor, a chief of the Taphians, Mentor.

She found the arrogant suitors, they
had fun with draughts, in front of the doors
sitting on hides from oxes they had slaughtered themselves.

For them pages and swift servants
110
some mixed wine in bowls and water,
others with porous sponges tables were washing
and placed them before them, others divided much meat.

Godlike Telemachus was by far first to see her,
for he was sitting among the suitors, troubled in his mind,
115
thinking of his excellent father, if he, coming from somewhere,
would disperse the suitors in the palace,
have himself honour and would rule in his palace.

Thinking of that, sitting among the suitors,he saw Athene.
he went straight to the front gate, indignant
120
that a stranger so long should wait at the gates.

Approaching her
he took her right hand, and took her spear of bronze,
and speaking to her he said the winged words:
Welcome, stranger, with us you will find hospitality; and then,
after you have eaten a meal you may tell us why you are here.

125
Having said so, he led the way, and she followed, Pallas Athene.
And when they were inside, in the high room, ,
the spear he placed, it setting against a high pillar,
in a polished spear-rack, where even other
spears of the brave Odysseus, were set, many.

130
herself on a chair he did sit, leading her,
below a linen cloth having spread,
a beautiful richly-wrought (chair); below was a stool for feet.
Beside it he himself placed an inlaid seat, apart from the others,
the suitors, lest the stranger, vexed by the tumult,
should have no appetite, in the midst of arrogant men,
135
and also in order that he him about his father
who had gone, might ask.

Then a handmaid poured water in a pitcher; it bringing
in a beautiful golden (pitcher), (it pouring) over a silver basin
(for them) to wash, and beside them drew up a polished table.

And a grave housewife set before them food, it bringing,
140
many dainties adding, giving freely of her store.
And a carver placed before them platters of meats,
having lifted them up, (meats) of all manner,
and set by them golden goblets;
a herald ever walked to and fro pouring them wine.

Then in came the proud suitors, and thereafter
in rows they sat them down on chairs and high seats.

For them heralds poured water over the hands,
and maid-servants heaped by them food in baskets,
and youths filled the bowls to the brim with drink;
and they put forth their hands to the delicacies lying before them.

But when they had lost the yearning for drink and food,
the suitors, in their hearts to other things they turned,
to song and to dance, indeed the additons of a meal;

A herald put a beautiful cither in the hands
of Phemius, who sang among the suitors. enforced;
and he, playing on the cither, began lovely to sing.

But Telemachus spoke to bright-eyed Athena,
close holding his head, that not might hear the others :

ξεῖνε φίλ᾽, ἦ καὶ μοι νεμεσήσεαι ὅττι κεν εἴπω;
“Dear stranger, will you be angry at me for what I shall say?
For these men these things are interesting, a cither and song,
easily, because the livelihood of another they unavenged devour ,
ἀνέρος, οὗ δή που λεύκ᾽ ὀστέα πύθεται ὄμβρωι of a man whose white bones perhaps rot in the rain,

lying upon the mainland, or a wave rolls them in the sea.
If they should see him to Ithaca returned,
they would all pray to be swifter of foot,
rather than richer in gold and in clothing.

But now he has thus perished a miserable death, nor for us (is there) any
comfort, (not) even if any one of men upon the earth
should say that he will come; of him has gone the day of returning.

But come, tell me this, and declare it truly:
τίς πόθεν εἰς ἀνδρῶν; πόθι τοι πόλις ἠδὲ τοκῆες;
Who, from where, are you among men? Where (are) your town and parents?
On what kind of ship did you come, and how did sailors
ἤγαγον εἰς Ἰθάκην; τίνες ἔμμεναι εὐχετόωντο;
bring you to Ithaca? Who did they declare themselves to be?
For by no means, I think, did you come here on foot!

And tell me this also truly, that I may know well,
whether you come newley or whether you are indeed of my father
a friend, for many men came to our house,
others, since he, too, had gone to and fro among men.”

Then him answered the goddess, bright-eyed Athene:
“To you all that I will tell, very openly.
I pride myself to be Mentes, wise Anchialus’
son, but of the gladly rowing Taphians I am the lord.

Now, as you see, with my ship I came on land and with my crew,
sailing over the wine-dark sea to foreign-speaking men,
to Temese. ( trading) for bronze, and I carry glittering iron.

My ship lies here on land, away from the city,
in Rheithron Harbour, below wooded Neion.

We wish to be each others friends, as our fathers,
(friends) of old, go and ask that old
hero, Laertes, from whom they say that he no longer to the town
comes, but far off in the fields endures (his) sorrows

with an aged woman for servant, who his food and drink
serves, when weariness grips his limbs,
as he toils among the slope of his vineyard.

Now I came, because men said that he was among his people,
your father; but now the gods hinder his journey,
for not yet has died on earth the noble Odysseus,
but still alive, I think, he is detained in the wide sea,
on an island, flowed around, rough men hold him fast,
wild (men), who perhaps keep him by force.

But now I will prophesy for you, such as in one’s mind
put the immortal (gods), and what I believe will be,
though I am no seer, nor well acquainted with omens.

Not for long far from his beloved homeland
he will be, not even if iron shackles hold him;
he will think up how he will return, for he is very clever.

But come on, say me and truly tell it:
if you really are a so great son from Odysseus self.

Amazingly as to head and beautiful eyes you are like
him, for very often we were together with each other,
before he for Troy embarked, where also the other
bravest of the Argives went in hollow ships.
After that I have never seen Odysseus nor he me.’

Him wise Telemachus answered:
‘To you, friend, very honestly I will speak.

Mother says I am from him, but I
do not know; for not yet one self found out his descent.

If only I had been the happy son of some
man, who spent old age among his own possessions!
But now he became the unluckiest of mortal men.
From him, they say, I am born of, since you ask me that .’
