Genesis 44
And Joseph commanded
the head of his house, saying
“Fill the sacks
of the men with food,
as much as they can lift,
and put each man’s money
in the opening of the sack.
And my cup, the silver one,
put it in the sack of the younger one,
and his amount for the grain.”
And it happened
according to the word of Joseph
as he had told him.
Early in the morning
the light became visible,
and the men went their way,
they and their donkeys.
After they had left the town
[they were not far away]
and Joseph said
to the head of his house:
After getting on your feet
follow after the men
and overtake them,
and you will say to them:
‘Why did you give back
πονηρὰ ἀντὶ καλῶν;
evil for good?
Why have you stolen from me
τὸ κόνδυ τὸ ἀργυροῦν;
the silver cup?
Is it not this one
ἐν ᾧ πίνει ὁ κύριός μου;
out of which my lord drinks?
He does with an omen
prophecies in it.
As bad things you have performed
that what you have done.‘”
After finding them he said them
according to those words.
They said to him,
“Why does the lord speak
κατὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα;
according to those words?
Far be it from your servants
to do according to that thing!
If the money
that we found in our sacks
we brought back to you
from the land of Canaan,
how then should we steal
from the house of your lord
ἀργύριον ἢ χρυσίον;
silver or gold?
With whom he will be found,
the cup, of your servants,
he must die;
and we will be slaves
of our lord.”
And he said:
“And now, as you say,
so it will be.
The man,
with whom the cup will be found,
he will be my slave,
and you will be guiltless.”
And they hurried and took down,
everyone, his sack
ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν
on the ground.
and each opened
his sack.
And he searched,
with the eldest beginning,
until he came with the youngest,
and he found the cup
in the sack of Benjamin.
And they tore their clothes,
and each one loaded
his sack on his donkey,
and they returned to the town.
Judah went in,
(he) and his brothers to (the house of) Joseph,
while he was still there,
and they fell before him to the ground.
Joseph said to them:
Τί τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο, ὃ ἐποιήσατε;
“What is this deed, that you have done?
Do you not know that with an omen
οἰωνιεῖται ἄνθρωπος οἷος ἐγώ;
will predict a man such as I?”
And Judah said:
“What shall we answer to the lord,
or what can we say,
ἢ τί δικαιωθῶμεν;
or with what we may justify ourselves?
God found the injustice
of your servants.
See, we are slaves of our lord,
both we and (the one)
with whom has been found the cup.”
But Joseph said:
“May not happen for me
to do that thing!
The man,
with whom the cup was found,
he shall be for me a slave,
but you, go up
in peace to your father.
Judah pleads for Benjamin
Having come nearer to him,
Judah said: “I askyou, lord,
May your servant say
a word to you,
and do not be angry with your servant,
for you are like Pharaoh.
Lord, you asked
your servants, saying:
Εἰ ἔχετε πατέρα ἢ ἀδελφόν;
‘‘Have you a father or a brother?’
And we said to the lord:
‘We have an older father,
and a younger son,
the child of his old age,
and his brother is dead;
he alone is left
for his mother,
and the father loves him.
And you said to your servants:
‘Bring him down to me, ‘
and I shall take care of him.’
And we said to the lord,
‘The boy cannot leave
the father; if he should leave
the father, he (the father) would die.
But you said to your servants:
‘If not comes down
your younger brother with you,
you shall not go further to see ‘
my face.’
And it happened when we had gone up
to your servant,
our father,
we reported him
the words of the lord.
And our father said to us:
‘Go again,
buy us a little food.’
And we said:
‘We will not can go down,
but if our youngest brother
goes down with us,
we will go down.
For we will not can
see the face of the man
if our youngest brother
is not with us.’
And he said, your servant,
my father, to us:
‘You know that my wife bore me two (sons);
and one has gone away from me,
and you said:
‘He has been eaten by wild animals,
and I have not seen him until now.
If you will take him also
away from my face,
and harm will come over him on the way,
you will bring down my old age
in sorrow to Hades.’
Now therefore, when I travel
to your servant, our father,
and the boy will not be with us,
(and his life is dependent
on the life of him),
and it will be, when he sees
that the boy is not with us,
that he will die;
and your servants will bring down
the old age of your servant,
our father, with sorrow to Hades.
For your servant has received
the boy from my father, saying:
‘If I will not bring him to you,
and will (not) set him facing you,
then I will have failt
in regard to the father
all the days (of my life).
Now therefore, I will stay with you
as a slave in place of the boy,
as servant of the lord;
and the boy must go up with the brothers.
For how will I go up
to the father
τοῦ παιδίου μὴ ὄντος μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν;
if the boy is not with us?
May I not see the misery
that will strike my father.”
