Cain and Abel · Jan 4, 11:15 PM by Ad van den Ende

Genesis 4, 1-6, 8-16

Adam had intercourse with Eva,
his wife
and, after becoming pregnant,
she bore Cain and said:
Ἐκτησάμην ἄνθρωπον
‘I have acquired a man
by (the help of) God.’

And she added to bear
his brother Abel.
And Abel became shepherd of sheep,
Cain was cultivating the ground.

And it happened
after (some) days
that Cain brought
(some) of the fruit of the ground
for an offering to the Lord.

And Abel, too, brought
(for an offering)
(some) of the firstborn
of his sheep
and of their fat.

And God was pleased with Abel
and his gifts.

But to Cain
and to his sacrifices
he did not turn attention.

And he hurted Cain very much,
and he (Cain) did get a scowl
on his face.

And the Lord God said to Cain:
Ἵνα τί περίλυπος ἐγένου,
‘Why are you very sad,
and why that scowl
τὸ πρόσωπόν σου;
on your face?

And Cain said
to Abel his brother:
Διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πεδίον.
‘Let’s go out to the field.’
And it happened
while they were
in the field,
and Cain rose
against Abel, his brother,
and he killed him.

And God said to Cain:
Ποῦ ἐστιν Αβελ ὁ ἀδελφός σου;
‘Where is Abel, your brother?’

He said: ‘I don’t know.
μὴ φύλαξ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μού εἰμι ἐγώ;
Am I the guardian of my brother?”

And God said:
Τί ἐποίησας;
‘What have you done?

The voice of the blood
of your brother
is crying out to me
ἐκ τῆς γῆς.
from the ground.

And now, you are banished
ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς,
from the ground,
which has opened its mouth
to receive the blood
of your brother
out of your hand.

Even though you cultivate
τὴν γῆν,
the ground,
it will not deliver
its best to give you;
a drifter and a tramp
ἔσῃ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
you will be on the earth.

And Cain said
to the Lord:
‘To great is my guilt
than to withdraw from it.

If you drive me today
out of the land,
and from your presence
I will hide,
I will be a drifter and a tramp
ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς,
on the earth,
and it will be that
whoever finds me
will kill me.’

And the Lord God said to him:
Οὐχ οὕτως·
‘Certainly not;
anyone, who kills Cain,
sevenfold punished
he will pay for it.’

And the Lord God put
a mark on Cain
so that not would kill him
anyone who found him.

Cain went away
from the presence of God
and settled in the land Nod,
opposite to Eden.
