Arion saved by a dolphin · Jan 12, 04:01 AM by Ad van den Ende

I 23-24

Periander was
the son of Cypselus;
he who to Thrasyboulos
had announced the oracle;
Periandros was the tyrant
of Corinth;
The Corinthians say
(and the Lesbians agree with them)
ἐν τῷ βίῳ
that during his life
a very wondrous thing has happened,
that Arion out of Methymna
on a dolphin
has been brought to Tainaron,
beiing a player on the lyre
from the people of that time
second to nobody,
and the first (to invent) the dithyrambic measure
of the people whom we know,
to recite in it and give it its name
and teach it at Corinth.

They say that this Arion,
the most of the time
spending near to Periander,
did long to sail to Italy
and to Sicily.

And that, having made great profits,
he wanted to go back to Corinth.
That he did leave Tarentum,
and, trusting in nobody more than in Corinthians,
he hired a vessel of Corinthian men.

And that they, in open sea, formed a plot
to throw Arion overboard
to have his money.
When he discovered this he implored them,
his money offering to them,
to save his life.

But he did not persuade them,
and the ferrymen ordered him
either to kill himself
in order to have a grave on land,
or to leap into the sea so quick as possible.

Arion, pressed hard to perplexity
asked,
because they had decided so,
to allow him, in full costume
standing on the afterdeck, to sing;
and after having sung he promised
to destroy himself.

And they, feeling pleasure
that they would hear
the hymn of the best (singer) of all people
withdrew from the stern
to the middle of the ship,
and he, having dressed himself in the full costume
and after having taken the lyre,
standing on the afterdeck
he sang the whole Apollo-hymn,
and as soon as his song was ended
he flung himself into the sea.
such as he was with his full costume.

And they (the sailors) sailed on to Corinth,
but they say that a dolphin him (Arion) took (on his back)
and brought to Taenarum.
Dismounted he went to Corinth
with his costume,
and after arriving
he told all that had happened.

But Periander, out of disbelief,
put Arion in prison
nowhere he let him go;
and he did look out for the sailors.
As soon as they appeared
he called them and asked
if they could tell something about Arion.
When they said he was safe and sound
in Italy and that he was doing well
when they left him in Tarentum,
then Arion appeared before them
just as he was when he jumped (in the sea).

And they, astonished,
could not, when they again were interrogated, deny.
That’s what Corinthians and Lesbians say,
and of Arion there is a bronze monument,
not big, at Taenarum,
a man, sitting upon a dolphin.
