Apriès fighting against Amasis · Aug 19, 04:56 PM by Ad van den Ende

2,162-163 and 169

Apries, having heard that,
sends Amasis to them to stop (them) by words.
and when he, having come, tried to retain
the Egyptians to do that,
as he was speaking, one of the Egyptians,
standing behind him,
put a helmet upon him,
and as he did put it on he said
that he put it on considering royalty.

And to him not at all unwelcome
was this that was done, as he proved.
for when they had set him up as king
who had revolted of the Egyptians,
he prepared to march against Apries.

And Apries, having heard that,
sent to Amasis a highborn man
of the Egyptians about him,
whose name was Patarbemis,
having told him Amasis alive
to bring to him.

When Patarbemis, having arrived, summoned Amasis,
Amasis he happened to be sitting on a horse
having lifted up (his leg), farted,
and ordered him to take back that to Apries.

Nevertheless (they say) Patarbemis made demand (of him)
that he, because the king summoned him, should go to him.
and that he answered him
that he had for some time past been preparing to do so,
and that Apries would find no fault with him.
for that he would be present himself
and would bring also other (men with him).

(They say that) Patarbemis from that which was said,
not ignored his intention,
and seeing him preparing himself
departed in haste
desiring as quickly as possible to the king
to make known the things which were being done;
(They say that), when he came back to Apries,
not bringing Amasis,
not giving him permission to speak
but being very angry
ordered to cut off his ears
and his nose.

When they had seen, the rest of the Egyptians
who still remained on his side,
the man of most repute among them
being in so awfully bad shape through mutilation,
no longer waiting
deserted to the others
and delivered themselves over to Amasis.

Then Apries, having heard this also,
armed the mercenaries
and marched against the Egyptians;
he had about him
Carian and Ionian men,
thirty thousand mercenaries.
His royal palace was in the city of Saïs,
being great and worthy to be seen.

So the men around Apries
were going against the Egyptians,
and the men around Amasis against the strangers.
and to the city of Momemphis came both sides
and were about to attack one another,

and although the strangers fought well,
yet being in number much inferior
by reason of this they were defeated.
