Greek civilization and character · Aug 29, 04:44 PM by Ad van den Ende
Preface
‘This exciting selection from the writings of outstanding Greek historians explores many of the far-reaching ideas and ideals of their civilization. (…) the book offers a rewarding look at those experiences of the ancients that may give us a key to the riddle of our own destiny. It is Toynbee’s strong belief (…) that there is a close parallel between Hellenic civilisation and our own, and that the problems which confront us today are analogous to many of those faced by the Greek world.’
The passages have been chosen by Arnold J. Toynbee. For my subtitling I owe much to his translations
