Joseph’s brothers go to Egypt to buy Corn. · Nov 19, 01:19 AM by Ad van den Ende

Genesis 42, 1-24

When Jacob heard that there was sale in Egypt
he said to his sons:
Ἵνα τί ῥᾳθυμεῖτε;
“Why are you indifferent?
See, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt;
go down to there and buy for us
little quantities of food,
so that we may live and not die.”

And they went down, the brothers of Joseph, the ten,
to buy grain out of Egypt.
But Benjamin, the brother of Joseph,
he did not send with his brothers.
For he said:
“To prevent that ever
harm might come to him.“

And the sons of Israel came to buy
with (the other people) who came.
For the hunger was in the land of Canaan.

And Joseph was ruler of the land;
he sold to all the people of the earth.
And having come, the brothers of Joseph,
they prostrated themselves before him
with their faces to the ground.
And Joseph, when he saw his brothers,
he recognized (them),
and he pretended to be a stranger for them,
and spoke to them harsh things,
and he said tot hem:
Πόθεν ἥκατε;
“From where have you come?”
And they said:
“From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”
And Joseph recognized his brothers,
and they did not recognize him.
And Joseph remembered the dreams
that he had seen himself,
And he said to them, “You are spies,
to see the ways of the land you have come to!”
And they said: “No, my lord;
your servants have come to buy food.
We are all sons of one man;
we are peaceful,
your servants are not spies.”
And he said to them: “No,
but to see the ways of the land you have come to!”
And they said:
“We are twelve, your servants,
brothers in the land of Canaan;
and see, the younger one
(is) with our father now ,
and the other one is no more.”

And Joseph said to them:
“That is as I have said to you,
saying that you are spies!
In this you will show (your true character):
at the health of Pharao
you shall not leave from here
if not your brother, the younger one,
comes here.

Send away one of you
and bring your brother,
and (the rest of) you have to be shut up
until your words have become clear.
whether you speak the truth or not;
εἰ δὲ μή,
if not,
at the health of Pharao,
truly you are spies.”

And he put them in prison
for three days.
He said to them on the third day:
“You have to do this and you will live
for I fear god;
if you are peaceful men
one brother of you has to be detained
in the prison,
you yourself have to go
and must take along with you the purchase
of your distribution of grain.

And your younger brother,.
bring him to me,
and your words will be believed,
if not, you will die.

And they did so.

And everyone said to his brother:
“Yes, for we are in sin
as to our brother,
because we did not pay attention
to the anguish of his soul,
when he begged us,
and we have not listened to him;
because of that
has come upon us his anguish.”

And Reuben, answering, said to them:
“Have I not told you, saying:
Μὴ ἀδικήσητε τὸ παιδάριον;
Do not maltreat the boy?
And you have not listened to me.
And see, his blood is revenged.”

They did not know
that Joseph heard (them),
for the interpreter
was in the middle of them.
After turning away from them
Joseph wept.
And he came again to them
and spoke to them,
And he took Simeon away from them
and let tie him before their eyes.
