The Garden of Eden · Nov 20, 08:39 PM by Ad van den Ende
Genesis 2
On the day when God made
the heaven and the earth:
5 καὶ πᾶν χλωρὸν ἀγροῦ
every shrub of the field
(was) before growing on the earth
and every plant of the field
(was) before sprouting,
for God did not sent any rain
ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν,
to the earth,
and no man there was
to cultivate the land.
A spring did well up
ἐκ τῆς γῆς
from the earth
and did water
the whole surface of the earth.
And God formed
the man
(out of) soil from the ground
and breathed into his nose
the breath of life,
and the man became
a living creature.
And the Lord God planted
a garden in Eden,
in the east,
and he put there
the man whom he had formed.
And God made grow besides
ἐκ τῆς γῆς
from the soil
every tree (that was)
pleasing to look at
and good for food,
and the tree of life
in the middle of the garden
and the tree of knowing knowledge
of good and bad.
A river
flows from Eden
to water the garden;
from there it is divided
into four headstreams.
The name of the first is Pishon;
it is flowing round
the entire land of Havilah,
there where is the gold.
The gold
of that land is good;
and there is the charcoal
and the precious stone.
And the name
of the second river is Gihon;
it is flowing round
the entire land of Ethiopië.
And the third river is Tigris;
this (is) the flowing
opposite to Assyria.
The fourth river,
this (is the) Euphrates.
And the Lord God took
the man
he had formed,
and placed him
in the garden
to cultivate it
and guard it.
And the Lord God commanded
Adam, saying:
‘From every tree
in the garden
you may eat for food,
but from the tree
of the knowing good and bad,
do not eat from it;
for on the day
when you eat from it,
you will die a death.’
And the Lord God said:
Οὐ καλὸν εἶναι
‘It is not good
the man alone;
let us make for him
a helper acording to him.’
And God formed
ἐκ τῆς γῆς
out of the ground
all wild animals of the field
and all the birds
of the heaven,
and he brought them
to Adam to see
what he would name them,
καὶ πᾶν, ὃ ἐὰν
and whatever
Adam called each living creature,
that (was) its name.
And Adam called names
for all the cattle
and for all the birds
of the heaven,
and for all the wild animals
of the field;
but for Adam
not was found a helper
conveniant for him.
And God laid
a deep sleep on Adam,
and he fell asleep;
he (God) took
one of his ribs
and filled up
flesh in the place of it.
And the Lord God converted
the rib
he took from Adam
into a wife
and brought her
to Adam.
And Adam said:
‘This one is now (at last)
bone out of my bones
and flesh out of my flesh;
she will be called ‘woman,’
for out of her man
she was taken.’
That is why
a man will leave
his father
and his mother
and will be united
with his wife,
and they two will be
one flesh.
And the two were naked,
Adam and his wife,
and they were not ashamed.
