Genesis 41
It happened after two years of days
(that) Pharaoh saw a dream.
He thought to stay by the river,
and see, even as out of the river
came up seven cows,
beautiful in appearance
and exquisite by their flesh,
and they grazed in the reed grass.
And seven other cows came up
after them out of the river,
ugly in appearance
and thin in flesh,
and they grazed next to the cows
along the edge of the river,
and they ate up, the seven cows,
the ugly and thin in flesh,
the seven cows, the beautiful in appearance
and the exquisite.
And Pharaoh awoke.
And he fell asleep the second (time),
and see, seven ears of grain
came up on one stalk,
exquisite and beautiful.
And seven other ears
thin and shrivelled by the wind
sprouted after them.
And they swallowed up, the seven ears,
the thin and shrivelled by the wind,
the seven ears,
the exquisite and the full.
Pharaoh awoke, and it was a dream.
It became early in the day,
and his spirit was troubled;
and having sent (people)
he called for all the interpreters
of Egypt and all the wise men of it,
and Pharao told them the dream,
καὶ οὐκ ἦν
and there was no one
who did interpret them to the Pharaoh.
And the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh
saying: “My fault I mention today;
Pharaoh was angry with his servants,
and put us in custody
in the house of the captain of the prison,
me and the chief baker.
And we saw a dream on one night,
I and he,
each we saw according to that of himself a dream.
And there was with us a young man,
and we told him,
and he explained (it) for us.
And it happened such as he had explained for us,
so too it turned out,
both that I was restored to my office,
and that he was hanged.”
And Pharaoh, having sent (people)
summoned Joseph;
and they brought him out of the prison
and they shaved him
and changed his clothes,
and he came in before Pharaoh.
And Pharaoh said to Joseph:
“I have seen a dream,
and who can explain it is not there;
I have heard of (people) who tell about you
that you, having heard dreams,
have explained them.”
And Joseph, answering the Pharaoh, said:
“Without god not will answered
the well-being of Pharao.”
And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph,
saying: “In my dream
I thought to stay on the edge of the river;
and even as out of the river
came up seven cows,
beautiful in appearance
and exquisite by their flesh,
and they grazed in the reed grass.
And see, seven other cows
came up after them out of the river,
bad and ugly in appearance
and thin in flesh,
such as I did not see
in all the land of Egypt as more ugly,
and they ate up, the seven cows,
the ugly and thin in flesh,
the first (ones),
the beautiful and exquisite (ones).
And they went into their stomachs
and it was quite not visible of them
that they went into their stomachs,
and their sights (were) ugly
such as also in the beginning.
And after awakening I fell asleep.
and I saw again in my dream,
and even as seven ears of grain
came up on one stalk,
full and beautiful;
And seven other ears
thin and shrivelled by the wind
sprouted after them
and they swallowed up, the seven ears,
thin and shrivelled by the wind,
the seven ears,
the beautiful and the full.
So I told (it) to the explainers,
καὶ οὐκ ἦν
and there was no one
who explained (it) to me.”
And Joseph said to the Pharaoh:
“The dream(s) of Pharaoh are one;
what god is about to do
he let see to the Pharao.
The seven cows, the beautiful (one’s),
are seven years,
and the seven ears, the beautiful (one’s),
are seven years,
the dream(s) of Pharaoh are one.
And the seven cows,
the thin (one’s), that came up
after them
are seven years,
and the seven ears,
the thin and shrivelled by the wind
will be seven years of famine.
(This is) the word that I told Pharaoh.
What god is about to do
he has shown to Pharaoh;
See, during seven years will come
great abundance in all the land Egypt;
and there will come seven years
of famine after them,
and they will forget the abundance
in whole the land Egypt
and the famine will consume the land,
and not will be recognized
the abundance in the land
because of the famine that will be
ater that, for it will be very violent.
And as to the recurrence
of Pharaoh’s dream, twice,
(this means) that the thing real will be
from the side of God,
and god will hurry
to do this.”
So now you must look out for
a man, sensible and wise,
and you must appoint him
over the land of Egypt.
And Pharao must do (this)
and he must appoint overseers
ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς,
over the land,
and they must take one-fifth of
all the products of the land Egypt
of the seven years of the abundance.
And they must gather
all the food
of the seven coming years,
those beautiful one’s.
And the grain must be collected
under the authority of Pharaoh,
for food in the cities it must be saved.
And the food will be
reserved for the land
for the seven years of the famine,
that will be in (the) land Egypt,
and not will be rubbed out
the land by the hunger.”
The words did find favour with Pharao
and with all his servants,
and Pharaoh said
to all his servants:
“We will not likely find
a man like this one,
ὃς ἔχει πνεῦμα θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ;
who has the spirit of god in him?”
And Pharaoh said to Joseph
“Since God has shown you all this,
there is no man more sensible
and more wise than you.
You shall be over my house,
and to your command
shall obey all my people;
only with regard to the throne
I will rise above you.”
And Pharaoh said to Joseph:
“See, I set you today
over all the land of Egypt.”
And Pharaoh, after removing
the signet ring from his hand,
put it Joseph on his hand
and he put on him a robe of fine linen
and put a gold chain
around his neck,
and he let him ascend
on the second chariot of those of him,
and a herald announced in front of him,
and he appointed him over all the land of Egypt.
And Pharaoh said to Joseph:
“I am Pharaoh, and without you
no one shall lift up his hand
in all the land of Egypt.”
And Pharaoh named Joseph
the name of Joseph Zaphenath-paneah;
and he gave him
Asenath daughter of Potiphera,
priest of Heliopolis, as his wife.
Joseph was thirty years (old)
when he stood facing Pharao,
king of Egypt.
And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh,
and went through all the land of Egypt.
And the earth produced
in the seven years of the abundance abundantly.
And he gathered up all the food
of the seven years,
in which there was the abundance
in the land of Egypt,
and stored up the food in the cities,
the food from the fields of the city
(which laid) around it
he stored up in it.
And Joseph stored up grain
like the sand of the sea,
very much,
until they could not count (it),
because there was not a number.
And for Joseph were born two sons
before came the seven years of the famine,
whom Asenath bore to him,
daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis.
And Joseph named the name
of the firstborn Manasseh:
“For God has made me forget
all my distresses
and all those of my father.”
And the name of the second
he named Ephraim:
“For God has raised me
in the land of my humiliation.”
They went by, the seven years of the abundance,
that were in the land Egypt,
and the seven years of the famine began to come,
just as Joseph had said,
and there originated famine in all the land,
in all the land of Egypt
there were no loafs of bread.
And all the land of Egypt starved,
and the people screamed
to Pharaoh for bread.
And Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians:
“Go to Joseph,
and what he says to you, you must do.”
And the hunger was
over all the land.
And Joseph opened
all the grainsheds
and sold to all the Egyptians.
And all the lands came to Egypt
to buy (grain) from Joseph,
because the hunger dominated
throughout the earth.
